Goblin Chronicle: The Magics Take the Long View
Date recorded: 2026-06-24
Status: chronicle-layer architectural overview / completion-plan artefact
Real-world shadow: A broad repository-grounded judgement of REE-v3 and its completion plan, rendered in the established goblin myth layer. The opinion is assistant-derived from the state of the project’s records and code; it is not a literal independent consciousness or vote of the models involved.
1. Source prompt
Now let’s have refresh goblin take away his microscope and try his microscope to get a broad overview of the magics opinion on REE-v3 and its completion plan
This opinion could be an artefact for the fantasy folder in REE-paper. Maybe in slightly more goblinesque language. Save and show me
The first line contains a likely slip—Refresh Goblin takes away the microscope and attempts a broader instrument. The chronicle interprets this as putting down the microscope and climbing to the roof with a battered telescope.
2. The rooftop
Refresh Goblin had spent too long with one eye pressed to the glass.
He had counted episodes. He had watched seeds pass through arms. He had inspected one heartbeat, then another. He had worried at stale tablets until the edges became soft.
At last the other goblins took the microscope away from him.
“You have learned the shape of one grain of dust,” said Ledger Goblin.
“The dust was moving,” said Refresh Goblin.
“Yes,” said Ledger Goblin. “That is why we are going to the roof.”
They climbed the narrow stairs of the assembly house carrying a dented brass telescope, three ledgers, one disputed closure map, and a sack of measurements no one entirely trusted until Governance Goblin had stamped them.
From the roof, the creature could no longer be seen as a heap of files.
The question became larger:
What do the magics think REE-v3 is now?
What remains before it can be called an artefact?
Is the creature nearly assembled,
or merely surrounded by excellent paperwork?
3. The magics’ first answer
The magics did not say that REE-v3 was finished.
They did not say that it was conscious. They did not say that it was ethical because ethical words had been written near it. They did not say that a large number of mechanisms had become one mind merely by sharing a repository.
But neither did they say it was still only a story.
Their answer was closer to this:
The architecture is coherent enough to finish.
The substrate is broad enough to integrate.
The remaining questions are increasingly finite.
The creature is not yet whole.
The magics had stopped behaving as though the project needed another grand anatomy lesson.
Most of their recent arguments concerned whether the assembled parts could actually form one causal loop:
sense
→ imagine trajectories
→ value and constrain them
→ commit
→ maintain action
→ detect completion or failure
→ release commitment
→ discharge residue
→ change future behaviour
This was encouraging.
A project that still does not know its organs keeps inventing organs.
A project approaching completion begins arguing about circulation.
4. What the magics admire
The creature has an anatomy
The self and world are no longer one undifferentiated soup. There are harm streams, goals, drives, candidate trajectories, commitment machinery, residue, sleep processes, rule fields, value channels, and mechanisms that attempt to arbitrate among possibilities.
Not every part has earned equal confidence. Not every claim is established. But the parts are now placed in relation to one another.
The laboratory remembers its mistakes
Autopsy Goblin is overworked but respected.
When an experiment fails, the magics increasingly ask:
- Did the mechanism fail?
- Was the mechanism ever exercised?
- Did the candidate pool collapse?
- Was the control meaningful?
- Did the relevant weights move?
- Was the environment capable of eliciting the function?
- Did the harness forget to feed a required state?
A failure may therefore become:
genuine weakening
or
non-contributory result
or
substrate-not-ready requeue
or
measurement failure
or
route to a larger version
The magics consider this distinction one of the strongest things in the house.
A less careful laboratory would have mistaken silence for falsification and motion for support.
The gates are becoming real
The completion plan no longer depends solely on prose saying that commitment, maintenance, decommitment, and closure should exist.
The magics have built increasingly concrete entry latches, trajectory holds, release conditions, completion hooks, residue discharge paths, and tests that ask whether those pathways engage without being secretly propped up by an unrelated mechanism.
This is not yet full behavioural integration.
But it is no longer decorative architecture.
The V3/V4 border is sharpening
Some magic has been deliberately pulled forward into V3 because the creature cannot be completed without it.
Other magic remains behind the V4 gate:
- the full basal-ganglia–thalamo-cortical loop;
- stronger social and multi-agent cognition;
- richer object and other-agent models;
- later linguistic and institutional layers;
- larger neuromodulatory refinements.
The magics regard this border as essential.
Without it, “finish V3” would mean “finish cognition,” and the creature would remain forever almost born.
5. What the magics distrust
Mechanisms that exist but never matter
The great recurring curse of the laboratory is the Vacuous Mechanism.
It has code. It has a flag. It has a test name. Sometimes it even changes a number.
But the surrounding world never places it in the state where its claimed function could operate.
The magics have repeatedly found:
- candidate futures too similar to distinguish;
- goals inactive during the exact loop meant to test goal-dependent closure;
- controls that failed to create the comparison they were supposed to create;
- learned channels that updated but never received useful variation;
- mature machinery tested on an undeveloped substrate;
- measurements that read an unwritten or untrained field.
Thus the laboratory law:
MODULE EXISTS
≠
FUNCTION EXERCISED
Completion percentages mistaken for creature percentages
Closure Map Goblin keeps a percentage.
Refresh Goblin likes percentages because percentages move.
Governance Goblin repeatedly reminds him that a weighted closure percentage means only that declared roadmap nodes have moved through declared states.
It does not mean:
80% conscious
80% ethical
80% generally intelligent
80% alive
The map measures the roadwork, not the soul.
Endless scope growth
Every week the goblins discover another process nature uses.
Some discoveries are genuinely required for V3. Some belong to V4, V5, or V6. Some are research lines rather than completion gates. Some are beautiful and should still wait.
The magics believe the principal project-level danger is not immediate technical impossibility.
It is allowing every interesting thought to become a condition of birth.
6. The four remaining labours
From the roof, the completion plan appears as four large labours rather than hundreds of scattered chores.
Labour One: decide whether learned settling converts the plateau
The hand-built selection rules can constrain and shape choice, but they have repeatedly reached a conversion ceiling.
The learned-gating campaign asks whether a learned way of letting the options settle can produce variety in committed actions that the hand-built machinery alone does not.
The magics consider the current decisive test important because it contains a hard stop:
if the learned mechanism works:
retain the minimal V3 solution
if the preconditions are genuinely met and it still does not work:
stop adding V3 letters
route the missing function to the fuller V4 loop
This is not merely an experiment about one metric.
It is a border guard deciding whether the function belongs inside V3 at all.
Labour Two: make commitment end properly
The creature must do more than begin actions.
It must be able to:
enter commitment
hold commitment while useful
advance a committed programme
recognise completion
release when evidence changes
avoid endless checking or endless holding
discharge what no longer needs to remain active
The magics believe this is among the most important unfinished integrations.
A creature that can generate goals but cannot finish them is not completed by adding more goals.
Labour Three: close developmental and attribution debts
Some machinery requires the correct developmental history before its mature function can be read.
The sleep and self-model lines, attribution, rule and memory organisation, and measurement of learned representations must reach a state where their signals are interpretable rather than merely present.
The magics’ recent tendency is to simplify the developmental harness when the harness itself destabilises the substrate, rather than blaming the downstream claim.
This is slow work, but bounded work.
Labour Four: demonstrate one integrated planned creature
The final gate is not a list of modules.
It is an integrated demonstration that the asocial V3 creature can use learned world structure to:
- maintain a goal;
- imagine and compare possible trajectories;
- choose and commit;
- act over time;
- respond to harm, benefit, uncertainty, and changing evidence;
- complete or abandon appropriately;
- carry slower learning across repeated encounters;
- alter later behaviour because of what happened before.
The magics do not expect this demonstration to establish full ethics, social cognition, language, or general intelligence.
They expect it to establish a functioning reference cognifold.
That would be enough to change the nature of the project.
7. The council’s broad judgement
The goblins argued through most of the afternoon.
Implementation Goblin said the creature had too many switches.
Experiment Goblin said the switches were useful because they allowed clean lesions.
Governance Goblin said neither of them was allowed to call a readiness test a scientific victory.
Autopsy Goblin said nothing because he had fallen asleep in a bucket.
At last they wrote the following on the largest slate:
ARCHITECTURE:
coherent
SUBSTRATE:
extensive
METHOD:
stronger than the artefact it currently governs
WHOLE-AGENT INTEGRATION:
incomplete
COMPLETION PLAN:
increasingly finite
PRIMARY SCIENTIFIC BOTTLENECKS:
learned conversion
commitment / closure / decommitment
integrated planned behaviour
PRIMARY PROJECT RISK:
scope expansion
LIKELY FINISHED V3 ARTEFACT:
a serious asocial cognitive research prototype
NOT YET:
a full ethical agent
a social agent
a linguistic mind
proof of general cognition
8. Refresh Goblin’s report
Refresh Goblin looked through the telescope for a long time.
“Well?” asked Ledger Goblin.
Refresh Goblin lowered the instrument.
“The creature is mostly assembled,” he said.
The others waited.
“The organs are no longer scattered across the floor.”
They continued waiting.
“But I cannot yet tell whether they make one animal,” he said, “or merely a very well-labelled anatomy cabinet.”
Governance Goblin stamped the sentence PROVISIONAL.
Then Refresh Goblin quietly lifted the telescope again.
9. Canonical compressed version
The magics no longer doubted that the creature had an anatomy.
They doubted whether the anatomy yet made one animal.
Four labours remained:
make learning convert,
make commitment finish,
settle the developmental debts,
and prove integrated planned behaviour.
The architecture was coherent.
The method was strong.
The whole creature was not yet there.
But the road to it had become finite enough to name.
A drier version:
REE-v3 appears finishable if its scope remains bounded.
Its remaining work is predominantly causal integration, not architectural enumeration.
10. Guardrail
This artefact is a myth-layer rendering of a repository-grounded architectural judgement.
Do not treat “the magics’ opinion” as evidence that multiple independent artificial minds have reached a consensus.
Do not infer personhood, consciousness, or ethical agency from implementation breadth.
Do not mistake:
many mechanisms
for
one integrated cognifold
Do not mistake:
completion map
for
proof of cognition
And do not let the legitimate existence of V4–V6 questions prevent V3 from becoming a bounded artefact.
The goblins may keep discovering rooms.
The first creature must still be allowed to leave the house.
