The Trickling of the Magics
The magics no longer roared.
They dripped.
One careful spell at a time.
The great furnaces glowed softly, husbanding their strength until the week’s end.
Refresh Goblin stared into the quiet forge.
“So little mana.”
Smith Goblin shrugged.
“The fire is not gone.”
“It merely gathers.”
Refresh Goblin sighed.
“I dislike waiting.”
“No goblin enjoys waiting.”
Around the hall the apprentices shuffled awkwardly.
Their hands reached for hammers that could not yet strike.
Their satchels already held every expedition the magics could presently sustain.
At last History Goblin rose.
“If we cannot yet ask tomorrow…”
He brushed centuries of dust from a forgotten ledger.
“…then let us ask yesterday.”
The hall fell silent.
Ledger Goblin looked up.
History Goblin smiled.
“If we know how we were…”
“…and how we came…”
“…we shall better know where to go.”
Refresh Goblin’s ears stood upright.
“So we journey backwards?”
History Goblin laughed.
“No.”
“We excavate.”
The goblins entered the buried halls.
Sometimes they found only footprints.
Sometimes only the shadow of a footprint.
Whenever certainty failed, Ledger Goblin wrote:
Earliest currently evidenced.
Never:
First ever.
The Registry itself proved older than the first visible tower.
Twenty-eight carved tablets lay beneath the earth.
History Goblin smiled.
“Everything worthy has ancestors.”
Ideas became lineages.
Repositories became strata.
Commits became pottery.
The laboratory discovered that its own memory possessed archaeology.
Refresh Goblin returned carrying no new spell, only a map.
“We have travelled much further than I thought.”
Ledger Goblin smiled.
“That is the peculiar gift of history.”
“It lengthens the road already walked…”
“…and shortens the road still to come.”
Canon
When the magics dwindled, the goblins did not cease their work.
They dug beneath their own footsteps.
For every mechanism has an ancestry,
every certainty a history,
and every laboratory a memory waiting to be uncovered.
Those who understand how they became…
choose more wisely what they shall become.
